We will break for lunch at Ribarska Koliba, which was established over 100 years ago. This restaurant is known for serving the daily fresh catch of seafood. After lunch, we will depart for Opatija (1h drive), where we will get to experience the impressive monuments, magnificent villas, and well manicured parks of this charming coastal town.
After the tour of Opatija, we will check into the 5-Star Hotel Ambassador Opatija, which received a Travelers’ Choice Award in 2022 from Trip Advisor . We will dine this evening at Ružmarin Restaurant. A symbol of Opatija hospitality, Ružmarin offers a variety of dishes from fresh seafood to delicious pizza.
Day 2: Oct 27
We will depart Opatija for the Plitvice Lakes (2h 30m drive). We will tour Plitvice Lakes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This beautiful park has 16 lakes interconnected by a series of waterfalls and is set in deep woodland populated by deer, bears, wolves, boars, and more.
We will break for lunch at Lička Kuća, a restaurant located within the national park of Plitvice Island. This converted barn has beautiful timber beams inside and a sprawling terrace outside. The restaurant uses locally sourced produce to create farm to table meals that remind us of a grandmother’s kitchen.
After lunch, we will depart for Zadar (2h drive) and check into the Bastion Boutique Hotel, a member of the Relais & Chateuax luxury hotels. Dinner tonight will be Butler Gourmet & Cocktails Garden, which serves traditional Dalmatian cuisine in a modern and innovative way and amazing cocktails. The restaurant offers a wonderful view of the city and harbor.
Day 3: Oct 28
After checking out of the Bastion Boutique Hotel, we will go on a tour of the city of Zadar, whose history has been long and tumultuous. We will visit the 16th century fortifications that still guard parts of the city and walk through the narrow, traffic-free streets to the heart of Old Town. Here you can visit the beautiful Byzantine church of St. Donat and shop at the local market. Your tour will conclude at the unique Sea Organ, a series of musical steps leading to the ocean.
We will break for lunch at Foša, a seafood restaurant situated in a small port close to the ancient walls built in the 16thI century. Their food is a combination of traditional Dalmatian food combined with a modern flair.
After lunch, we will continue to Split (2h drive), Croatia’s second largest city. The city has a balance of traditional and modern traditions. Here, we will check into the Marmont Heritage Hotel, a World Luxury Hotels Award winner.
Tonight’s dinner will be at Šug, a restaurant located in the heart of Split. The name “Šug” pays homage to the key components of every sauce in Dalmatia. It combines traditional Croatian dishes with modern cooking techniques of some of the top chefs in the industry.
Day 4: Oct 29
Today we will tour Split. We begin at Emperor Doceltian’s Palace, built as a residential villa and is globally the best-preserved sample of late-antiquity imperial architecture according to UNESCO. Next, we will venture on to the Temple of Jupiter, which is built around 300 AD inside the Palace and is dedicated to the ancient Roman god Jupiter. Additionally, we will visit St. Domnius Cathedral, one of the oldest in the world. The bell tower of this cathedral is on the coat of arms of the city.
We will break for lunch at Kadena Restaurant, where you will experience the unforgettable flavors of a combination of Mediterranean cuisine and molecular gastronomy. After lunch, you will have the afternoon to explore the city at your leisure. Dinner will be at Noštromo Restaurant, one of Split’s iconic restaurants. It is known for having the freshest fish and seafood, especially the shrimp scampi.
Day 5: Oct 30
This morning, we will depart for Mostar in Bosnia-Herzegovina (2h30m drive). Mostar is a small, picturesque town, famous for its Old Bridge from the 16th century. Be sure to look out for the professional jumpers who jump from the bridge into the cold Neretva River to impress visitors. The town is a dichotomous symbol of Islamic architecture in a predominantly Catholic city. Our local guide will lead us around the sites of this historical city.
Lunch will be at your leisure before our drive to Dubrovnik (2h30m drive). Here we will check into the Excelsior Hotel, a Member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World. Tour Descriptions
Journey to the Dragon City - Lake Bled to Ljubljana
Sunday, October 20th
Depart: 8:30am
Return: 5:30pm
** Please wear comfortable walking shoes for this day trip.
Our excursion around Ljubljana is a bespoke experience exclusively for Radiology International that you won’t find in any of the guidebooks. Our first stop is Lake Bled which has been considered a world-renowned paradise for centuries, impressing visitors with its natural beauty, wealth of legend and special powers to restore well-being. The tour takes in key monuments that give insight into the city's rich history before you venture on to see the glacial Lake Bled, fed by hot springs, which has been included on the list of candidates for the new seven Wonders of the World. You will be transported to the country's only island in pletnas, traditional wooden boats, which are operated by a single rower, to the Bled Island in the middle of the lake. Here you will have the option to climb 99 stone steps to reach the Assumption of Mary Church, which dates back to 1655. Legend has it that if you make your wish when you ring the bell, it will come true. Before we continue on to Ljubljana, you will enjoy kremšnita, the traditional Bled cream cake.
Next we travel 1 hour to Ljubljana, the Dragon City, because of the many dragons used as protection on monuments and decorations. We will first stop for lunch, where we will visit some of the city's most striking Baroque monuments and sites, including Ljubljana Castle. The castle was built in the 15th century and stands atop a hill above the historic old center of Ljublana. This mighty medieval fortress has served as military housing, as well as the royal residence for several centuries. You will have some leisure time to stroll along the river and explore the many shops and cafes, before returning to the hotel.
Trieste on Foot
Monday, October 21st
Depart: 3:00pm
Return: 5:30pm
** Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
You will begin your exploration of this historic city at Piazza Unità d’Italia, the largest square in Europe. With one side open to the sea, the piazza is overlooked by the city's most important buildings, demonstrating an expression of public power and economic development. Next, we will head up San Giusto hill, where two churches, San Silvestro and Santa Maria Maggiore sit side by side. The oldest is now the church of the Helvetic community and the other built by the Jesuits. From there, you will visit the Arch of Richard, the oldest Roman-era element visible today (First Century A.D.), and was a gate of the Roman city. Additionally on San Giusto Hill is the old city centre, with the Roman forum and the remains of the civil basilica, the Cathedral dedicated to the patron saint of Trieste (where you will discover the splendid 11th-century mosaic apses) and the medieval castle. We will conclude the tour by visiting the Roman Theatre, which is an archaeological site (2nd-3rd century A.D.), and could accommodate up to 6,000 spectators. This theater emerged completely during an excavation of the area.
Fairy Tale Castles of Trieste
Monday, October 21st
Depart: 2:30pm
Return: 6:30pm
** Comfortable shoes are recommended.
After a 30-minute scenic drive along the coast, the first castle to be seen is the impressive Old Duino Castle, clinging to a rocky karst spur on the sea cliffs. Built in 1389, it was constructed on the ruins of a Roman outpost. The location is exquisite and strategic, as it’s the northernmost coastal area where the Mediterranean Sea reaches the European mainland. For many centuries, the castle was a cultural, philosophical, and artistic center.
Our next to is Catello di Miramare. Sitting on a rocky outcrop 7km from town, the castle is clearly visible from afar thanks to the whiteness of the karst marble from which it is made. The castle was built around 1855 when the Archduke, who also became Emperor of Mexico, together with his wife Charlotte of Saxony, daughter of the king of Belgium, decided to build a majestic residence overlooking the sea in the surroundings of the Friulian capital, precisely on the promontory of Grignano. The castle's décor reflects Maximilian's wanderlust and the various obsessions of the imperial age: a bedroom modeled to look like a frigate's cabin, ornate orientalist salons, and a red silk-lined throne room. Upstairs, a suite of rooms used by the military hero Duke Amadeo of Aosta in the 1930s is also intact, furnished in the Italian Rationalist style. Maximilian was a keen botanist and the castle boasts 22 hectares of gardens, which burst with the color and scent of rare and exotic trees, more than 2,000 species of different plants from all over the world. Legend has it that Charlotte still wanders the park, calling Maximilian's name. ** Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
