I didn’t really know what to expect when I first visited China. I had anticipated that parts would be very modern and other parts very antiquated but wasn’t really prepared for the extremes. I had expected extreme left wing socialism but all I saw was good old fashioned right wing Capitalism. “Wasn’t that a Porsche Cayenne”, “Oh, and there is a Rolls Royce dealership.”
At the opposite end of the spectrum and within a few hundred yards, the ubiquitous bicycle rules supreme and it is as if nothing has changed in hundreds of years, apart for the ever present cell phone which reminds one that this is the 21st century.
As for the hotels, such professionalism I have rarely experienced……. anywhere. Service is incredible with someone around every corner to help you and the people are very friendly, helpful and extremely polite.
Our congress will start in Beijing (formerly Peking) the site of the 2008 Olympic Games. Beijing is the political capital of China and could be compared to Washington, D.C. while Shanghai has that unflagging energy that definitely makes it the New York of China. We will spend the second half of our congress in this effervescent metropolis.
|
Shanghai |
While in Beijing we will visit Ti’anamen Square, The Forbidden Palace, The Temple of Heaven, The Summer Palace and the Great Wall.
One of the highlights will be a Gala banquet at the Daoyutai State Guesthouse. This is where visiting Heads of State stay when visiting China and over 180 world leaders including most of our Presidents since Richard Nixon made his historic visit, have stayed there.
On Thursday morning we will fly to Xi’an to view the amazing Terracotta Warriors and on the same afternoon fly on to Shanghai where we will spend three nights.
In Shanghai we will visit the Jade Temple where you will see the beautiful carved Jade Buddah’s and then on to the the delightful Yu Yang gardens. We will also visit Zhujiajiao a fascinating canal town on the River Cao Guang.
We are extremely pleased that Professor Jian-ping Dai, M.D. who is Chairman of the Neurosciences Institute, Beijing Tiantan Hospital; Chairman of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and also Chairman of the Chinese Radiological Society, has kindly agreed to be our co-sponsor.
