Beatty grew up on a small farm near Larne, a seaport 20 miles from Belfast in Northern Ireland. Having attended Queen’s University, Belfast, he received his medical degree (MB) in 1965. After his internship, he began a radiology residency in the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast.
Following the offer of a fellowship in Paediatric Radiology by Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1973, Beatty moved to Baltimore and trained under the direction of the late John Dorst and Martin Donner. Kook Sang Oh and Richard Heller became his mentors: he was fortunate enough to be there during the time of Stanley Siegelman. Having fallen in love with the U.S.A., he decided to stay, spending the next year at the University of Maryland under the direction of the late John Diaconis. While there he became Board Certified.
1975 brought a move north to Connecticut to begin work at the newly inaugurated University of Connecticut (UConn) Health Center. Thomas Spackman became Chairman soon afterwards. In 1979, Beatty came up with the idea of organizing an international radiology conference. He forged ahead with the support of Tom and Dean Robert Massey. Their first conference was in Killarney, Ireland in 1979 and attracted 400 people. There was no looking back and Beatty has been organizing meetings ever since.
He left UConn in the late 80s, and formed RADIOLOGY INTERNATIONAL in partnership with Betsy Birchenough. In the meantime he became an American citizen. When Betsy retired, his wife, Karin, became his business partner, resigning when they divorced early in 2010.
Meanwhile Beatty became Chairman of Radiology at Sharon Hospital in North West Connecticut, staying there for six years before taking up an appointment with Regional Radiology at the Cleveland Clinic under the direction of Michael Modic. After a couple of years, he moved across the street and began working at the University Hospitals of Cleveland with John Haaga.
A few years later, he returned to Sharon, Connecticut and performed locum work. This he found to be not very fulfilling and he moved back home to Belfast in December, 2007. He now spends most of his time organizing conferences. He still competes as a navigator (co-driver) in car rallies, a hobby which he has pursued with passion since he was a teenager.
